Can you eat too little to lose weight? Is there such a thing as starvation mode? Is a sluggish metabolism?
Yes and no.
From a physiological point of view: no. If sticking to the diet isn't a problem and you eat very little, you'll lose fat. You can't store calories out of thin air, and even if you could, no one would starve.
From the perspective of the real world, of human behavior, yes. It's certainly possible to eat too little, because that usually leads to overeating. Excessive restriction almost always leads to overindulgence. We see this again and again in our counseling sessions. The fatal aspect? Cravings and cheat days are vastly underestimated.
This cycle of excessive restriction and overindulgence is rarely an effective way to achieve a deficit. Moreover, the psychological pressure is extremely high! After a binge, you feel bad, worry, and worthless, like a failure. That's not how a good day can start. 😫
The truth about starvation mode is that when you try to lose fat, your body fights back by increasing hunger and reducing exercise to conserve energy stores. This is a normal and inevitable side effect of dieting. It's also very individual. One of the reasons dieting is more difficult for some people is that their hunger increases and their exercise decreases, making it harder to maintain a deficit and lose fat. These are all factors that are often forgotten and overlooked.
