Ice bathing has a long tradition in Finland, Russia, and China. Holes are cut in the ice and an ice bath is "enjoyed" naked. Is cold water a bit of a torture for you? Admittedly, it takes a lot of effort, but if you treat yourself to an ice bath regularly, you'll be amazed by the positive side effects. You don't have to wait until the nearest lake freezes over; a cold bathtub or even a cool shower will do the trick ;)
- A cold bath after exercise strengthens your immune system: Regular ice baths protect you against infections. And the frosty treatment also trains your body's body temperature: This way, your body learns to better cope with uncomfortable cold and temperature fluctuations. The result: You become more robust.
- Ice bathing after exercise helps you recover. The alternating cold and warm temperatures promote blood flow and stabilize your circulatory system.
- Ice baths are especially beneficial after endurance sports. Ice baths are especially helpful after endurance runs or intense competitions such as a (half) marathon.
- Ice baths can help with weight loss. Cold also boosts your metabolism.
Tip: Take two short baths for 4 or 6 minutes. When showering, we recommend alternating between warm and cold water.
Caution: Ice bathing isn't suitable for everyone. If you have high blood pressure or heart disease, you should avoid an ice bath after exercise—or in general.
